    The Facebook Game

Sony Online Entertainment commissioned Saizen Media the creation of ten illustrated crime scenes  and various graphical assets for the brand new Facebook game “CATCH A killer”, based on the James Patterson thriller books franchise. Saizen Media’s cinematic and detail-oriented approach to graphic assets creations and illustrations/Digital Matte Paintings was a perfect fit for the creation of the necessary look and mood for the in-game environments.

Our task was to create, based on scripts and sketches that take inspiration from the books’ actual stories and locations, ten different murder scenes to be investigated. Each scene would require a process involving all objects to be painted on separate layers, therefore removable along with their shadow without affecting the rest of the composition. The user would then search and analyze clues and hidden objects placed within the enviroments in order to solve the murder case.

Each scene needed a light-source placement which would result in a consistent 5 o’clock shadow casting of objects which would therefore have the ability of being repositioned at each gameplay via the use of a random-scatter-engine implemented in the game logic and functionality. A neutral lighting was also required in creating each environment, with extra light cycles and backdrops  added on separate layers. Thanks to this approach every location could have three variants of lighting corresponding to the different times of the day (morning, afternoon and night) and which vary based on the time of the gameplay. The technical difficulty of the creative process was further increased by a very tight deadline, which required a single scene to be created at high resolution from scratch to finish line in three days, for a total of ten scenes.

Saizen Media’s most recent collaboration with Sony Online Entertainment resulted in the creation of a visually stunning, intricate and highly engaging Facebook game that thriller fans worldwide would simply “die-for”.
